Lay Lake Open this weekend!

The Lay Lake Open presented by Comfort Keepers is this weekend! We’ll be giving out the best prizes of the year, thanks to our sponsors, including the Big Wills Outfitters Angler of the Year prizes! Bernie’s on Main Street will be our hosts on Friday night and on Saturday afternoon; they have excellent food so please bring your appetite and thirst to thank them for their support. If you haven’t registered already, please do so online before the end of the day Thursday to help us prepare! Make sure to check out the Lay Lake Open webpage for more details about the event, including the tournament boundary map! See you there!

Coosa Classic is this weekend!!!

The 2015 Coosa Classic presented by the Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for this Saturday, August 15th. The event will be based at Coosa Outdoor Center. The Coosa Classic is a staple of the tournament trail and this will be the 4th year of the event and the 5th time we’ve visited. The stretch of the Coosa River below Jordan Dam is a productive fishery with some monster spotted bass that will really challenge your moving-water fishing skills – and it may just challenge your paddling skills too! If you prefer to avoid all those Class II rapids, you can also fish in the river starting at Coosa Outdoor Center and down to Fort Toulouse. You’ll only pass one small rapid but hit some of the best spots. Lake Jordan, above the dam, is also open to fishing at the Coosa Classic for those who prefer the lake fishing – however, we will say you are unlikely to find an advantage there as the bigger fish are caught below the dam at this time of year. No matter where you go, you are guaranteed a fun time at what is always our favorite stage. So come join us!

July Online Big Bass Tournament Announced!

This July we partner with North Alabama Kayak Fishing for an online big bass tournament! $10 entry fee with 50% cash payout to the angler catching the biggest bass! The other $5 from your entry fee goes to support Coosa Riverkeeper’s efforts to “Save the Skinny Water!” In spirit of #SavetheSkinnyWater, one rule modification for this online tournament is you can only score fish caught on skinny water (i.e., creeks and small moving rivers – no lakes, ponds, or big river). Even if you don’t win the big prize, your best bass score will count towards your Big Wills Outfitters Angler of the Year score and you’ll have a smile knowing you helped out a good cause.

To register for the July #NAKABIGBASS #SavetheSkinnyWater Tournament, please visit the NAKA registration page. You should also read the NAKA tournament rules, noting the variations for this particular charitable event (50% payout and skinny water requirement). You should also join the Facebook Event page for the tournament. Unique tokens will be sent to paid registrants the evening of June 30th.

While you’re at it, you’d look a lot cooler fishing for spots and redeyes wearing your Coosa Riverkeeper Save the Skinny Water tee! Get out there and enjoy it!

Neely Henry Open Preview

We’re almost through rainy April and soon, yes soon, the creeks will no longer be high and muddy. That’s when we’ll hit it hard on May 2nd at the Neely Henry Open presented by Greater Gadsden Area Tourism when you could enjoy some lake fishing or hit up one of many major creeks that are “in bounds” such as Big Canoe, Big Wills, or Terrapin Creeks. Hey there’s four outfitters on those creeks you could arrange a shuttle with and really cover some ground (see map for phone #s)! Friday night’s Captain’s Meeting will be at Back Forty (or pay $10 to skip). Saturday afternoon’s weigh-in will be at Blackstone Pub & Eatery. Included with your registration is a FREE ticket to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival which is at Horse Pens 40 all weekend. You’ll have to pay a little for parking and camping if you go but you’ll get to see some cool bands and can really maximize your weekend away from home. So what are you waiting for? Get signed up! Also, please travel down to Avondale Brewery in Birmingham on April 29th to catch the Fly Fishing Film Tour ($15), proceeds of which will benefit Coosa Riverkeeper.
